The Kolkata rape and murder case involving a female doctor continues to unravel, with new developments emerging daily. The incident, which occurred at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, has raised serious concerns about the safety and integrity of institutions in Kolkata.

Initial Incident and Discovery

On the morning of August 9, a body was discovered by hospital staff around 6:00 AM. The body was identified as that of a trainee doctor at the hospital. Despite the shocking discovery, the police were not informed until 9:00 AM, three hours later, which allowed the crime scene to be compromised as numerous hospital staff members inadvertently destroyed potential evidence.

Autopsy Findings and Allegations

The autopsy report, released on August 12, revealed severe injuries, including a deep wound in the victim’s private parts, suggesting multiple perpetrators. There were also signs of strangulation, and her glasses were shattered, with fragments found in her eyes. These findings have led to speculation that more than one person may have been involved in the crime. Despite this, only one suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested by Kolkata police, based on circumstantial evidence found at the crime scene.

Family’s Discovery and Hospital’s Delay

The hospital delayed informing the victim’s family about her death until 10:05 AM, when they were initially told she was unwell. It was only later that they were informed of her alleged suicide. When the victim’s mother finally saw the body at 3:00 PM, the extent of the injuries convinced her that this was not a suicide but a brutal murder.

Political and Legal Ramifications

The case quickly escalated, leading to public protests and political intervention. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded swift justice, calling for the death penalty for the accused within a week—a timeline that has been criticized as unrealistic and politically motivated.

The case was eventually transferred to the CBI after concerns were raised about the impartiality of the investigation, particularly because the autopsy was conducted at the same hospital where the incident occurred. Questions were also raised about the role of the hospital’s principal, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, who was allegedly uncooperative with the police investigation.

Key Questions for the CBI Investigation

As the CBI takes over the investigation, several critical questions need to be addressed:

Was Sanjay Roy the sole perpetrator, or were others involved?
Why was there a delay in informing the police and the victim’s family?
Were there attempts to tamper with evidence at the crime scene?
What is the connection between the incident and the ongoing construction work at the hospital?

The case has become a focal point for demands for justice, with many questioning the integrity of the initial investigation and the hospital’s role in the events leading up to and following the crime. As the investigation continues, the CBI faces significant challenges in uncovering the truth amid widespread public outcry and political pressure.
