There was a time when Gauri Khan decided to break up with Shah Rukh Khan because her family was against the relationship and he was growing over-possessive about her.
The one man who has taught an entire generation how to romance had a rather dramatic love story in real life. It’s Shah Rukh Khan’s love story with his wife of over three decades, Gauri Khan. The two had a whirlwind romance before their marriage in 1991. They faced opposition from Gauri’s parents because of him being a Muslim. All the drama at home around her relationship with Shah Rukh made Gauri take a break from it.
In a 1994 interview with Filmfare, Gauri had shared why she broke up with Shah Rukh. “Oh, that was at the beginning when my family had yet to reconcile themselves to the fact that he’s a Muslim. I didn’t want to hurt my family, so I decided to break up with Shah Rukh,” shared the interior designer and film producer.
Besides her family, the other main reason for Gauri to end her relationship with the ‘King of Romance’ was his over-possessive behaviour. Gauri added, “He was becoming a little too possessive and I’m a very independent person. I need space. Shah Rukh made me claustrophobic. The tensions were getting too much so I decided that there was no point in carrying on.”
However, just like his films, Shah Rukh is a die-hard romantic and a go-getter in real life too. He decided not to let go off her ladylove and followed her to Mumbai where she was on a vacation with her friends.
Gauri revealed how SRK ended up at her window in Mumbai and she ‘hated’ his gesture. She shared, “But Shah Rukh’s very determined, he manages to get what he wants. And he wanted me. I remember the time I’d broken up with him, I’d come to Bombay with some friends. For a week, we had a great time partying and shopping. On the last day when we were to return to Delhi I looked out of the window and there he was, standing under our building.”

Though Gauri’s friends were confident that there could not be a better life partner for her than this loving man who was standing outside her window, Gauri didn’t like it. “At that moment, I hated him for following me all the way from Delhi,” she shared.
But of course, Gauri gave in and decided to marry Shah Rukh. The two are happily married since 1991 and are parents to three childre, Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. On the work front, SRK had a great 2023, with all his three films, Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki, finding takers at the box office.
