Actor Amitabh Bachchan spoke to his Kakli 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin about the film’s success, and the positive response that his performance has received. In the epic science-fiction mythological film, the legendary actor plays Ashwatthama, a character from the Mahabharata, re-imagined for a new audience. Nag Ashwin said that whoever he speaks to thanks him for presenting Bachchan in such a grand fashion, and the actor brushed off the compliment, and said that it is all down to the writing and filmmaking.

In a conversation posted on the Vyjayanthi Movies YouTube channel, Bachchan said that he would be more interested in speaking to younger people about the movie, and what they derived from it. “It’s all very well to ask people coming out of the theatre what they felt, but we need to catch some people, the youngsters, and say, ‘Let’s sit down and have a chat and talk about what did you actually see, what was going through your mind?’ It would make a very interesting subject. I’m going to catch Abhishek and my granddaughter, and have a chat with them.” Amitabh Bachchan is grandfather to Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai’s daughter Aaradhya and Shweta Nanda-Nikhil Nanda’s daughter Navya Naveli.

Thanking him for being a part of the movie, the director said, “I know you don’t like this, but this is one of the few chances we have to thank you for your patience. The whole country, whoever I speak to, but they say it’s such a pleasure to see you in that avatar. I did a bunch of interviews, and everybody just said, ‘Thank you for giving us this Amitabh Bachchan’.”

Deflecting Nag Ashwin’s praise, Bachchan said, “I just feel that the compliment isn’t to me, it’s to the concept and the character. It speaks volumes about the film. It’s not a compliment about a certain star, and they liked their performance, and so on and so forth… When they compliment a Prabhas or a Deepika, they’re actually complimenting the concept of the director, Nagi, who was able to conceive and put together this story.”

Bachchan said that he has seen the movie four times already, and discovers new things with every rewatch. Kalki has emerged as the year’s biggest hit, and one of the top-grossing Indian films of all time. The film has grossed over Rs 1050 crore worldwide, and has netted Rs 600 crore in India.
