The controversy over Jaya Bachchan being addressed by her husband’s name in Parliament continues, with the latest incident involving her clash with Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Meanwhile, an old video has resurfaced on social media showing Jaya’s daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai’s reaction to being addressed with Bachchan as her surname.

Over a week ago, Jaya first voiced her dissatisfaction when Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh called her Jaya Amitabh Bachchan and the Samajwadi Party MP reminded Singh that calling her “Jaya Bachchan” would be enough. However, the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman mentioned that her name was officially listed with Amitabh as middle name and that he was merely following that. On Monday, during the ongoing monsoon session, Dhankhar addressed her by her full name, once again irking the parliamentarian.

“Sir, I hope you know the meaning of Amitabh. I mean, I am proud of the association with my marriage and my husband and of his achievements. But this is a new drama started by you all. This did not use to happen before,” she said. In response, Dhankhar informed her that there was a provision to change the name on the election certificate.

In the throwback video that has now gone viral, Aishwarya Rai can be seen taken by shock when the interviewer introduces her “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan”. With absolute surprise, she says on her face, “Ohoo… the titles… My god! Just regular Aishwarya, the way you have known me”. When the journalist asks her if Rai Bachchan has become her official surname, the global icon replies, “Aishwarya Rai as it has been professionally known who got married to Abhishek Bachchan. So, obviously, Aishwarya Bachchan. Make what you want to out of it,” with her ever-graceful smile.

Actor and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai married power couple Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan in 2007. The couple has a daughter, Aardhya.

It may be mentioned here that speculations about family tensions in the Bachchan fort have been rife ever since Aishwarya, along with Aaradhya, posed separately for the media at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s recent wedding, while the rest of the Bachchan family, including Abhishek, appeared together.
